What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam—a mandatory act of worship that requires eligible Muslims to give a portion of their wealth (typically 2.5%) to support the poor and vulnerable.

It purifies your wealth, uplifts your soul, and builds a more just society.

Why Zakat Matters

Beyond its spiritual reward, Zakat plays a vital role in addressing inequality and poverty. By redistributing wealth, Zakat helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

Uplifts widows
Educates orphans
Feeds families
Restores dignity

Who is Eligible to Receive Zakat?

Zakat must be distributed to the eight eligible categories mentioned in the Qur'an (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60):

  • The poor and needy
  • Those in debt
  • Stranded travelers
  • Those working in Zakat administration
  • New Muslims and others in need of reconciliation
  • Those striving in the cause of Allah
  • People held in bondage or slavery

BirrConnect verifies every beneficiary to ensure your Zakat is given in accordance with Islamic principles.

Who Should Give Zakat?

"As-Sadaqat (Zakat) are only for the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the needy) and those employed to collect (Zakat funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."

- Holy Qur'an (Chapter at-Tawbah, 60)

Zakat is obligatory for every free Muslim who:

  • Is of sound mind and has reached puberty
  • Owns wealth above the Nisab threshold for one lunar year

This includes cash, savings, gold, silver, and investments.
